Redesign of Wielstraat and Sportlaan in Beneden-Leeuwen

We Beneden-Leeuwen to redesign Wielstraat and Sportlaan in Beneden-Leeuwen . This is part of the "Levendig Leeuwen" plan. This plan has been approved by the municipal council.

The main activities

A design has been created for Wielstraat and Sportlaan. In both streets, we will be doing the following:

  • We are replacing the pavement on the roadway
  • We are installing a new sewer line for wastewater
  • We are installing an additional sewer line specifically for rainwater
  • We are creating parking spaces
  • We are creating more green spaces along the street
  • We are creating road narrowings to make cars drive slower

Comments on the draft

The design can be found at the bottom of this webpage among the downloadable files. Residents living near this project had the opportunity to provide feedback on the design. We compiled a response document that includes all the comments made by residents and our responses to them. We also included in this document a number of frequently asked questions from residents.
Based on this feedback, we do not need to make any changes to the design. We will also be implementing the design outdoors.

Response Memorandum on Wielstraat/Sportlaan

Resident's question/commentResponse from the municipality
Will the vitrified clay sewer pipes be replaced during the renovation? We will replace all clay pipes up to the property line. You are responsible for replacing any pipes located on your own property.
Unfortunately, the trees on Sportlaan are still standing; branches fall off regularly and the roots are pushing up through the ground. We remove the emerging roots as much as possible. We then smooth the surface out again. We check the trees regularly to ensure they remain safe.
Why are they building a walking path in the park? There will be no walking path through the green space. The line in the green area indicates the elevation.
There will, however, be a small cut-through halfway across to reach the street, just as there is now.
Will it still be possible to access the path from both sides later?Yes, this situation remains the same.
How is the work carried out? We’re carrying out the work in phases. So the entire street won’t be dug up all at once.
Will we be getting a new power cord as well?To do so, please contact the utility company Liander.
The tree blocks the sunlight; if it grows too large, it will affect the solar panelsWe choose tree species that do not grow too tall. This way, we prevent them from blocking natural light or obstructing solar panels in the future.
Frequently Asked QuestionsResponse from the municipality
Will the street/house be accessible during the work?During the work, part of the street may be temporarily closed to traffic. However, emergency services will always be able to access the area. We are doing our best to minimize any inconvenience to residents.
Your home will always be accessible on foot or by bike.
When will the work begin? We expect to begin in April or May 2026. The utility companies will get to work before then.
How long will the work take?We aim to have the work completed in time for Wiellawaai – Dag van Leeuwen (early July).
When will the plants/trees be planted? The planting season runs from October through April. Before then, we plant the flower beds with temporary plants (marigolds).
How will we know when you're starting?About two weeks before work begins, you will receive a letter containing practical information and the phasing plan.
Will there be new streetlights?Yes, the same one as on Molenlaan.
What will the street look like? The character of Molenlaan continues into Wielstraat and Sportlaan.

We are installing a storm sewer system on Wielstraat and Sportlaan. This will help reduce flooding during heavy rain. You can help too! You can do this by disconnecting your downspout from the storm sewer system. This can only be done at the front of your house. There is no charge, and we will take care of it for you. For more information, please see the flyer titled “Disconnecting Wielstraat-Sportlaan.”

To disconnect your service, please sign up. You can do this by filling out the registration form.
We will contact you. Together, we will discuss whether disconnection is actually possible.

Work Schedule

In the fall of 2025, the utility companies (water, gas, and electricity) will begin their work. They will be replacing cables and pipes. This will require partially opening up the sidewalks. There are also cables running beneath the parallel road to Sportlaan.

After that, we will begin the redevelopment. This will take place in early 2026. This will prevent the street from having to be dug up again later.
The utility companies will inform residents about, among other things, the start and end dates of their work and how you can access your home.
You can stay informed about the schedule and any road closures related to the redesign of these streets via the roadwork page.
