Rooijsestraat Redevelopment

The sewer system and roadway on the section of Rooijsestraat between De Paulus and Kanteel are in need of replacement. In addition, we would like to give the street a village-like character and make it safer for traffic. We can achieve this by designating the road as a 30 km/h zone. By, among other things, separating stormwater from the sanitary sewer system, we are making the street future-proof.

The final design

Resident meetings were held in May and November 2024. During the first meeting, we gathered your ideas and wishes for the redesign. Based on these and our requirements, we developed a preliminary design. We presented this design during the second meeting. We compiled your feedback into a feedback report. This report also includes our responses to your comments.

To the response memorandum on Rooijsestraat

For your convenience, we have also prepared a summary of the response memorandum. You can find it below.

Based on your feedback, we have revised the preliminary design into a final design. The final design and cross-sections are available for download at the bottom of this page.

Summary of the Response Memorandum on Rooijsestraat

General

The preliminary design has been modified in several respects, such as maintaining sight lines at intersections, ensuring all intersections are clearly defined, and narrowing the road to reduce speed. The road width of 5.10 meters ensures that trucks and cars can pass each other safely. The decision to use pavers is based on durability and ease of maintenance. A shoulder will be created between the roadway and the property line to ensure sufficient distance from moving traffic.

Accessibility and parking

The church will remain accessible for funerals, even during the fair. The street will be designed with a wide sidewalk on the side facing the shops (east side). Heavy vehicle traffic can pass safely thanks to the proposed street width of 5.10 meters. A good balance has been struck between parking spaces and green belts. Parking on the roadway will remain permitted with this street width.

Green

The mill’s surroundings are taken into account. Careful consideration is given to the choice of vegetation, taking into account the size of the tree canopies and the space required for freight traffic. The location of cables and pipes is taken into account when planting trees.

Request for additional measures

A few residents indicated that they found the final design to be insufficiently safe. We believe that we have taken sufficient measures. However, we take concerns about traffic safety seriously. That is why we have added 5 additional traffic-calming measures to the design. This was possible without making too many changes to the design.
You had until March 1 to indicate via a response form whether or not you wanted a measure.
Among the downloadable files, you will find the site plan showing the 5 measures. You can see from the photos what this looks like in other parts of the municipality. This will give you a better idea.

If there are enough “yes” votes—at least 50% of the addresses—we will implement the measure. You were allowed to fill out one form per address.

Results of the vote on additional measures

The results of the vote show that all 5 measures were selected by the local residents who were consulted. We have therefore incorporated the raised intersections, road narrowings, and curves into the final design (version 2).

Below is the percentage of addresses that voted "yes" for each measure.

  • Measure 1: 73% for an elevated intersection
  • Measure 2: 68% in favor of road narrowing
  • Measure 3: 73% for an elevated intersection
  • Measure 4: 65% for road narrowing
  • Measure 5: 73% for deflections

Next steps

On Monday, March 9, there will be an open house for all residents of Dreumel.
You are welcome to drop by between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. at D'n Hoender, 10 Nieuwstraat in Dreumel.
The final design will be on display, and there will be an opportunity to ask questions.
This design cannot be changed after this point.
Residents living along the section we are going to redesign are fully informed of the latest developments.

We expect to begin work in mid-2026. We will provide you with more information about this before then, including details on the phasing and schedule of the work, as well as contact information. You will also receive further details on disconnecting your home’s rainwater drainage from the water tile.

Vitens will be carrying out work on the street in early summer 2026. After that, we will begin the redevelopment. The advantage is that the street will only be dug up once. Vitens will notify residents through its own communication channels.

Will you join us?

We are installing a stormwater sewer system. This will help reduce flooding in the surrounding streets during heavy rainfall. You can also help by disconnecting your property from the sewer system. You can read more about what this means in the flyer “Disconnecting from the Stormwater System on Rooijsestraat.” Once we begin construction, we will let you know how to sign up for the disconnection.
