Redesign of Wielstraat and Sportlaan in Beneden-Leeuwen

We are going to redesign Wielstraat and Sportlaan in Beneden-Leeuwen. This is part of the'Levendig Leeuwen' (Lively Leeuwen) plan. This plan has been adopted by the municipal council.

The most important activities

A design has been created for Wielstraat and Sportlaan. We will do the following in both streets:

  • we are replacing the pavement of the roadway
  • we are installing a new sewer system for wastewater
  • We are constructing an additional sewer specifically for rainwater.
  • we create parking spaces
  • we are creating more green spaces along the street
  • we create road narrowings so that cars drive slower

Comments on draft

The design can be found at the bottom of this webpage among the downloadable files. Local residents were given the opportunity to respond to this design. We compiled a response document containing all the comments made by local residents and our response to them. We also included a number of frequently asked questions from residents in this document.
Based on these responses, we do not need to modify the design. We will also be implementing the design outdoors.

Response to Wielstraat/Sportlaan

Question/response from residentResponse from the municipality
Will the stoneware sewer pipe be replaced during the redevelopment? We will replace all stoneware pipes up to the property line. You will need to replace any pipes on your own property yourself.
Unfortunately, the trees on Sportlaan remain standing, branches regularly fall off, and the roots are coming up.We remove the emerging roots as much as possible. We lay it down nice and flat again. We check the trees regularly to ensure that it remains safe.
Why is a walking path being built in the green area? There will be no footpath in the green area. The line in the green area indicates the elevation measurement.
There will be a shortcut halfway, to reach the street, just like now.
Will it still be possible to drive onto the path from both sides?Yes, this situation remains the same.
How is the work carried out?We carry out the work in phases. So the entire street is not dug up at once.
Will we also receive a new power cable? For this, please contact network operator Liander.
The tree blocks out the daylight; if it grows too large, it will affect the solar panels. We choose tree species that do not grow excessively tall. This prevents them from obstructing daylight or solar panels in the future.
Frequently asked questionsResponse from the municipality
Will the street/property be accessible during the work?During the work, part of the street may be temporarily closed to traffic. However, emergency services will always be able to access the area. We will try to minimize any inconvenience to residents.
Your home will always be accessible on foot or by bicycle.
When will the work commence? We expect to start in April/May 2026. The utility companies will start work before then.
How long will the work take?We aim to have the work completed in time for Wiellawaai - Dag van Leeuwen (beginning of July).
When will the plants/trees be planted? The planting season runs from October to April. Before this time, we sow the planting beds with temporary plants (African marigolds).
How will we know when you are starting?Approximately two weeks before implementation begins, you will receive a letter containing practical information and the phasing plan.
Will there be new lampposts?Yes, the same one as in Molenlaan.
What will the street look like? The appearance of Molenlaan is continued in Wielstraat and Sportlaan.

Sign up to disconnect!

We are installing a rainwater sewer in Wielstraat and Sportlaan. This will reduce nuisance during heavy rainfall. You can help too! You can do this by disconnecting your downspout from the sewage system. This can only be done at the front of the house. It is free of charge and we will arrange it for you. You can read more about this in the flyer Disconnection Wielstraat-Sportlaan.

You can register to disconnect. To do so, please complete the registration form.
We will contact you to discuss whether disconnection is actually possible.

Planning activities

In the fall of 2025, the utility companies (water, gas, and electricity) will begin their work. They will be replacing cables and pipes. This will require partially opening up sidewalks. There are also cables under the parallel road to Sportlaan.

We will then start the redevelopment work. This will be in early 2026. This will prevent the street from having to be dug up again later.
The utility companies will inform local residents about the start and end dates of their work and how you can reach your home.
You can stay up to date with the schedule and any road closures related to the redevelopment of these streets via the roadworks page.
