Water permit
What is it?
You need a water permit for certain activities involving groundwater and (in or on) surface water.
Surface water is water in:
- locks
- pee
- ponds
- channels
- lakes
- streams
- rivers
How does it work?
For example, you need a water permit for:
- the construction of a jetty
- the removal of groundwater
- the discharge of wastewater or waste materials into surface water
- closing off water, such as filling in a ditch
- the construction of a water storage area for the temporary collection of (rain)water
- building on, near, or in the vicinity of a dike, pumping station, or water storage area
- organizing an event on the water
What should I do?
- Check on Omgevingsloket whether you need a water permit for your activities or whether you only need to submit a notification.
- Apply for the permit via Omgevingsloket online. Do this at least 8 weeks before you want to start the work. For complex applications, submit your application at least 6 months in advance.
- In your application for a water permit, you must indicate:
- at which location you wish to carry out the activities
- what these activities entail
- why you want to carry out the activities and what impact they will have on the environment
- the period during which you need the permit
- You can also submit the application or notification to the municipality where you want to carry out the activities.
What do I need?
- If you are applying for a water permit as a private individual, you will need your DigiD.
- If you are applying for a water permit for your business, you will need eHerkenning.
How long will it take?
You will receive a response from us within 8 weeks. The municipality may extend this period by 6 weeks. Sometimes we need advice and permission from another organization (competent authority). In that case, an additional 4 weeks will be added.
