From January 1, 2024, there will be a single law governing everything related to the space in which we live, work, and spend time: the Environment Act. This new law applies to all residents and businesses in the Netherlands.

We create our environment together. The Environment Act
The Environment Act.
In the Netherlands, we have many rules governing our living environment.
This often makes it difficult to get good initiatives off the ground.
All these rules will soon be consolidated into one new act: the Environment Act.
One act, a new Environment Desk, and clear procedures.
This is important for everyone.
The Environment Act allows you to quickly find out which rules apply in your area.
These include rules on noise, soil quality, building height
or safety requirements...
These rules are important for the quality of your environment.
Do you have an idea? Your application will be assessed against all the rules.
And within the rules, there is more room for initiatives. For example:

  • providing your own energy generation with your neighbors
  • convert your garage into commercial space
  • turning an empty piece of land into a playing field
  • convert the old watermill into a canoe rental and café

The Environment Act also offers more opportunities for participation.
For example, you can collaborate with the government and developers
on major construction projects.
