Placing objects on or near the road

What is it?

  • You are not allowed to use the road, sidewalk, or part thereof without permission. For example, for placing scaffolding, containers, building materials, or advertising signs.
  • If you still wish to do so, you must apply for an exemption from the municipality.

What should I do?

You can check whether you need an environmental permit via the Omgevingsloket (Environmental Permit Desk) at .

You then apply for the exemption from the municipality. Include the following information in your application:

  • why you want to place the object on or near the road
  • the place where the object will be placed
  • the size of the object
  • when and for how long you want to place the item

If you wish to place an object for the storage of movable property, you may need an environmental permit. For example, if you place a container for the temporary storage of rubble or building materials during a renovation.

How long will it take?

You will receive a response from us within 8 weeks. The municipality may extend this period by 6 weeks. Sometimes we need advice and permission from another organization (competent authority). In that case, an additional 4 weeks will be added.

Lodge an objection

Do you disagree with the municipality's decision?
