Driver's license

To apply for your driver's license, you must have passed your driving test at the CBR.

The costs are:

• Driver's license€53.65
• Health Declaration, for individuals aged 75 and older only€46.90

How does it work?

You need a driver's license to drive a moped, car, truck, tractor, or other motor vehicle.

How long is my driver's license valid?

The validity of your Class B driver's license (passenger car) depends on your age.

• Are you under 65? If so, your driver's license is valid for 10 years.
• Are you between the ages of 65 and 70? If so, your driver’s license is valid until your 75th birthday.
• Are you between the ages of 70 and 75? If so, your driver’s license is valid for 5 years.
• Are you over 75 years old? If so, your driver’s license is valid for a maximum of 5 years.
• A Class C driver's license (truck) and a Class D driver's license (bus) are valid for up to 5 years.

Driver's license for young people under 18

You can get your driver’s license starting at age 17. Until you turn 18, you must drive with a coach sitting next to you. One of your parents, for example, can serve as your coach. You may have up to 5 coaches.

When do I need a Health Certificate?

Sometimes you will need a Health Declaration ( ). The CBR uses this to assess whether you are mentally and physically capable of driving. This is important for road safety.

You will need a Health Declaration in the following situations:

• You are applying for a practical exam for the first time, or you want to add a category to your driver’s license.
• You want to obtain or renew a Class C and/or D driver's license.
• You have a medical condition.
• Your driver's license has been confiscated.
• You are 75 years of age or older.

When do I need a medical examination?

You must undergo a medical examination before applying for a driver's license in the following situations:

• You have a medical condition.
• You are 75 years of age or older and your driver's license is about to expire.
• You need a driver's license for a truck or bus.

Start your medical examination well before your driver’s license expires.
If you don’t start on time, your driver’s license may expire before you’ve been examined. In that case, you will be (temporarily) prohibited from driving.

Medical examination

After you have completed the Health Declaration, you will receive a message from the CBR. This message may state that you need to make an appointment with a medical examiner to have the medical examination report completed. You can ask your family doctor to refer you to a medical examiner.

To apply for your driver's license, you must have passed your driving test at the CBR.

Driver's license for young people under 18

Would you like to appoint someone as a coach? Here’s how to do it:

• Coaches must register with the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW).
• Once the coaches have registered, request a supervisor passat .
• Once you have received your caregiver pass, you can apply for your driver's license at the city hall

Medical examination

You must undergo a medical examination before applying for a driver's license if you:

• have a medical condition
• You are 75 years of age or older and your driver's license is about to expire
• need a truck or bus driver's license

Lost or stolen driver's license

Have you lost your driver's license, or has it been stolen? 

• Please report this online to the RDW first at . You will need a DigiD to do this. If you don’t have a DigiD, please report the loss to your local municipality.
• Next, apply for a new driver’s license at the city office. Be sure to bring a color passport photo and a valid form of identification.

What do I need?

• A clear, recent passport photo taken no more than 6 months prior to the date of application. This passport photo meets the requirements listed at .
• Cash or a debit card. You pay immediately when you apply.
• When applying for your first driver's license: a valid passport or a valid ID card.
• When renewing your driver's license: the driver's license you already have. If it is no longer valid, please also bring a valid passport or ID card.

Pick up your driver's license

You must pick up your driver's license in person at city hall. Please bring your old driver's license with you.

How long does it take?

• You can pick up your driver's license at city hall in about a week.
• If you submitted an urgent application before 2:00 p.m., you can usually pick up your driver's license as early as the next business day.

Additional information

Driver’s licenses now have a new chip. You can use this chip to log in to DigiD. Was your driver’s license issued after July 1, 2023? If so, you will receive a letter from DigiD within 5 business days of picking it up. This letter contains a PIN code, which you can use to activate the login feature.

Beginner's Driver's License

Individuals aged 18 or older are considered novice drivers for 5 years.

17-year-olds are considered novice drivers for 5 years if they hold a Class B driver’s license. If they only hold an AM driver’s license, they are considered novice drivers for 7 years.

16-year-olds are considered novice drivers for 7 years. 

New drivers receive a provisional driver’s license. This is a standard driver’s license, but it includes a point system for serious traffic violations. For more information, visit the Rijksoverheid’s website at .

Military driver's license

A Dutch military driver's license is not valid outside the military. However, you can exchange your military driver's license for a regular driver's license at your local municipality. You must do so within 3 years of the military driver's license being issued.

Foreign driver's license

With a valid foreign driver's license, you may drive in the Netherlands for a certain period of time. This depends on the country where your license was issued. For more information, visit theRDW website at.

In some cases, you can exchange your foreign driver’s license for a Dutch driver’s license. Check theRequirements at.

Code 95

• Code 95 must be listed on your driver's license if you want to drive a bus or truck for work.
• This code demonstrates that you are qualified for the job.
• Have you passed the exams and tests? If so, you can apply for a new driver's license at the city hall.
• Code 95 will appear on your new driver's license after category C and/or D.
