Is an informal care home something for you?

What is it?

An informal care home is an independent home on your own property and is intended for the person you care for. You can also live in the informal care home yourself. The person you care for then lives in the accompanying house.

  • You can have an informal care home installed in your garden.
  • You can also have an extension built onto your house.
  • A third option is to convert a garage or other existing structure into an informal care home.

How does it work?

You may sometimes need a permit for an informal care home on your own property. However, there are a number of rules. For example, you must comply with the Building Decree. This contains rules relating to safety, health, and the environment.

Other rules

  • A maximum of two people may live in the informal care home, at least one of whom receives or provides informal care.
  • If there are doubts about the informal care relationship, the municipality may request a statement from a general practitioner, district nurse, or other expert person or body.
  • You must comply with the general conditions for associated structures. These are rules governing, among other things, the size and location of the structure.
  • You may only use the ground floor of the informal care home as living space.
  • Are you converting an existing structure attached to your home into a care home? In that case, the size does not need to meet the conditions for permit-free construction.
  • Do you live outside the built-up area and have you opted for a mobile informal care home? In that case, there are no additional conditions regarding the building area.
  • When informal care ends, you may no longer use the structure as a residence. You do not need to demolish the residence, but you must remove the kitchen and bathroom.

What should I do?

  • Check online whether your building plans are permit-free. If you do need to apply for a permit, you can also do so via this desk.

Additional information

  • An informal care home is not a new home and therefore does not receive a separate house number. Would you still like a house number? Please contact the municipality.
  • Informal care homes are not taken into account when determining the WOZ value. Exceptions to this are:
    • informal care homes attached to the main residence
    • a converted barn

In that case, the municipality can take the value into account.
