COA takes the next step toward establishing a reception center in Boven-Leeuwen
The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) believes it is financially feasible to build a reception center in Boven-Leeuwen. This marks the start of a new phase for the project.

The Central Agency for the Reception of Asylum Seekers (COA) considers it financially feasible to build a reception center on the plot of land on Friessestraat in Boven-Leeuwen. The COA informed the municipality of this on June 11, 2025. The center is intended to accommodate up to 180 asylum seekers. This marks the start of a new phase for the project.
Location selected in December 2024
In December 2024, the Municipal Executive identified this plot of land as a promising location for housing 180 asylum seekers. An informational meeting on this topic was held on December 16 at MFA De Rosmolen. In the months that followed, the COA assessed whether it was financially feasible to establish the housing facility. That assessment has now been completed with positive results.
Next phase: spatial feasibility
The next step is to conduct a preliminary spatial feasibility study. This study will determine whether it is feasible from a planning perspective to build and operate the reception center on Friessestraat. The COA expects to be able to provide a definitive answer regarding spatial feasibility in the third quarter of 2025.
Alderman van den Boom: "We understand that the establishment of a reception center raises questions among residents. That is why we believe it is important to proceed with this process step by step and with due care. Now that the COA has confirmed the financial feasibility, we can work with them to further explore the spatial possibilities. We will continue to actively involve and inform residents, including through the focus group."
Focus Group
A number of residents have signed up for the focus group. As soon as it becomes clear that the shelter can actually be built, the municipality will invite this group to an initial meeting.
