Mailing address
What is a mailing address?
If you do not have a permanent address in the Netherlands, you can temporarily register at someone else's address or at an institution. This is called a correspondence address. You will then receive your mail at this address. You can apply for this correspondence address at the municipality.
From January 1, 2022, the municipality will be legally obliged to register individuals at a correspondence address.
If no correspondence address provider is available, the municipality must act as the correspondence address provider itself. This could be the address of the town hall, for example.
How does it work?
A mailing address must always be an address in the Netherlands and may not be a PO box.
The person or institution registered at the mailing address is referred to as the mailing address provider. The mailing address provider must ensure that you receive your mail from the government. Examples include:
- letters
- tax forms
- a voting pass
- a summons
Who can request a mailing address?
- The person concerned (the person who is going to live in an institution, or who has no residential address)
- Parents, guardians, and caregivers of young people up to the age of 16 who need a mailing address.
Request a mailing address for someone else
- A partner (married or registered partnership) may apply for a mailing address for the other partner if he/she has been authorized to do so in writing by that partner.
- Adult children may request a mailing address for a parent if they are authorized to do so by that parent.
In addition, the following persons may also request a correspondence address for someone else:
- Any adult on behalf of a person who has authorized him/her to do so in writing.
- The head of the institution where you will be living.
What should I do?
- You can apply for a mailing address at the municipality of the mailing address provider. Please indicate why you want a mailing address.
- If the municipality agrees, you will receive all mail from the municipality and other government agencies at this mailing address.
- Make sure you also provide your mailing address to other agencies.
If designated by the municipality, you only need to bring your valid ID.
Would you like to withdraw your consent for the correspondence address? Then request an address investigation.
What do I need?
- your valid proof of identity
- signed, written consent from the letterbox provider
- proof of identity (or a copy thereof) of the person providing the mailing address
If designated by the municipality, you only need to bring your valid ID.
