Beacons of Hope: A Unique Art Project
There are some places you see every day without realizing the story behind them. This is also true of the unique dike warehouses in the Land van Maas en Waal. These buildings have stood along the dikes for centuries. They remind us of the struggle against the water. In October, eye-catching works of art will adorn these buildings. There are eleven of them—have you spotted any yet?
They’re located at the following spots. You’ll also find a QR code at each location.

Dijkmagazijn, a quiet reminder of our battle against the water
The dike warehouses were once used to store supplies for dike maintenance. They contained items such as tools, sandbags, and oil lamps. These supplies were necessary for monitoring the dikes and protecting them from the water. The dike warehouses remind us of how people used to work together to keep the water out. They show how important the dikes were—and still are. The dike warehouses are located in Alphen on the Maas River, Appeltern, Beuningen, Deest, Dreumel, Ewijk, Maasbommel, Nederasselt, Weurt, Wijchen, and Winssen.
The project is part of the “Maas en Waal Stroomt” program. The artworks were designed by House of Thol from Overasselt. In their design, they took into account the fact that the dike warehouses are national historic landmarks and are located within a Natura 2000 area.
Come see for yourself and discover the story behind these remarkable buildings. Be amazed by the heritage that has been part of the Maas and Waal landscape for generations.
