What is asbestos?

Asbestos is a material that was widely used in the past in home construction. When asbestos breaks, burns, or crumbles, it releases carcinogenic substances. That is why you must follow strict guidelines if you want to remove asbestos.

What should I do?

If you are going to remove asbestos, you must file a demolition notice.

Submit the notification at least 4 weeks before you begin removing the asbestos. In the following cases, you must do so no later than 5 business days in advance:

  • As a private individual, you may remove screw-fastened sheets in which the asbestos fibers are bonded (not roof slates). The asbestos must come from residential buildings or outbuildings on your property that are not intended for or used in connection with your profession or business. You may remove up to 35 square meters per property.
  • As a private individual, you are removing floor tiles or non-adhesive floor coverings containing asbestos. The asbestos must come from residential buildings or outbuildings on your property that are not intended for or used in connection with your profession or business. You may remove up to 35 square meters per property.

After the demolition notice

The municipality will send you a confirmation of receipt for your demolition notification. If your notification is incomplete, you will be notified and will need to submit a new one. If your notification is complete, the municipality may Requirements on the demolition work. You Requirements comply with these Requirements .

Report the start and end of work

  • You must notify the municipality at least 2 business days in advance that you are going to begin removing asbestos.
  • Once you have completed the work, please notify us on the first business day following the completion of the work.

Rivierenland Environmental Agency

The Rivierenland Environmental Agency carries out all work on behalf of the municipality.

What should I bring?

Information provided in the report

  • name and address of the owner of the building containing asbestos
  • name and address of the contractor performing the work
  • address, parcel number, and type of building
  • the dates and times when you will be demolishing
  • how to demolish
  • information about the waste and how you plan to dispose of it
  • a scaled site plan showing the structures to be demolished

Asbestos Survey Report

You must include an asbestos inventory report if you:

  • removes more than 35 square meters of asbestos-containing material;
  • removes asbestos from a building constructed before 1994.

This report must be prepared by a certified asbestos survey company.

How long does it take?

You may begin removing asbestos 4 weeks after submitting your notification. If you have submitted a notification for work that required advance notice of at least 5 business days, you may begin demolition after 5 business days.

If you have received a notification that your report is incomplete, you may not begin yet. You must first submit a new report. The deadline will then start over.
