What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a substance that was widely used in the construction of houses in the past. When asbestos breaks, burns, or crumbles, carcinogenic substances are released. That is why you must adhere to strict rules if you want to remove asbestos.

What should I do?
If you are going to remove asbestos, you must submit a demolition notification.
- You can submit your notification online via the Omgevingsloket(Environment Desk). Use your DigiD to do so.
- Companies submit the report using eHerkenning.
Submit the notification at least 4 weeks before you start removing the asbestos. In the following cases, you must do so at least 5 working days in advance:
- As a private individual, you may remove screwed-down sheets in which the asbestos fibers are bonded (not roofing slates). This must be asbestos from homes or outbuildings on your property that are not intended or used for your profession or business. You may remove a maximum of 35 m² per plot.
- As a private individual, you are removing floor tiles or non-glued floor coverings containing asbestos. This must be asbestos from homes or outbuildings on your property that are not intended or used for your profession or business. You may remove a maximum of 35 m² per plot.
After the demolition notification
The municipality will send you confirmation of receipt of the demolition notification. If your notification is incomplete, you will be notified and will need to submit a new notification. If your notification is complete, the municipality may impose conditions on the demolition work. You must comply with these conditions.
Report start and end of work
- You must notify the municipality at least two working days in advance that you are going to start removing asbestos.
- When you have completed the work, please report this on the first working day after you have finished the work.

The Rivierenland Environmental Agency carries out all work on behalf of the municipality.
What should I bring?
Information included in the report
- name and address of the owner of the building containing asbestos
- name and address of the contractor performing the work
- address, cadastral number, and type of building
- the dates and times when you will be demolishing
- how you are going to demolish
- information about the waste materials and how you will dispose of them
- a scale drawing of the plot showing the buildings to be demolished
Asbestos inventory report
You must submit an asbestos inventory report if you:
- removes more than 35 m² of asbestos-containing material;
- removes asbestos from a building constructed before 1994.
This report must be drawn up by a certified asbestos inventory company.
How long will it take?
You can start removing asbestos four weeks after submitting your notification. If you have submitted a notification for work that you were required to report at least five working days in advance, you can start demolition after five working days.
If you have received a message stating that your notification is incomplete, you may not proceed. You must first submit a new notification. The deadline will then start again.
