Discharge of wastewater

What is it?

Wastewater discharge by companies

If your business plans to discharge wastewater into the municipal sewer system, the municipality needs to know about it. You are only required to report certain discharges. For other discharges, you must apply for a permit from the municipality.

Discharge of domestic wastewater

It is prohibited to discharge domestic wastewater outside the sewer system—for example, into a stream, river, lake, or the ground. Is your home or other building not (yet) connected to the sewer system? If so, apply for an exemption from the discharge ban. You can do this through the water authority in your region.

If you have a water discharge permit, you do not need to apply for an exemption.

You can find out what you need to do by visiting the Omgevingsloket website at .

What should I do?

Wastewater discharge permits for businesses

Submit your report or apply for a permit through the Omgevingsloket at . Please provide the following information:

  • whether you have previously obtained permits for the discharge of wastewater (such as an environmental permit or a water permit)
  • whether you have previously submitted a notification regarding the discharge of wastewater (only if you also have confirmation of the notification)

Exemption from the discharge of domestic wastewater

  • You should ask the water board whether you need an exemption.
  • If necessary, you can then apply for an exemption. When doing so, please indicate how you intend to discharge your domestic wastewater.
