Litter Arch at the Kaliwaal Raises Awareness About Keeping Nature and Rivers Clean

Many people enjoy nature while walking along the Kaliwaal. However, the area is sometimes littered with trash that has been left behind or washed ashore. The litter cleanup brigade is dedicated to keeping the area clean. “If everyone picks up their own trash, volunteers will have to spend less time cleaning up. That way, nature stays clean and we can all continue to enjoy it,” says Lambert Romijnders, coordinator of the litter cleanup brigade at Beneden-Leeuwen.

Don't leave any trash behind

The arch serves as a reminder to visitors not to leave their trash behind. Trash bags will also be available at the arch soon. Visitors can use them to dispose of their own trash after a walk or picnic. This makes it easier to find the trash can.

Trash travels along with the water

During cleanup efforts, volunteers find various types of trash, such as cans, bottles, packaging, and e-cigarettes. Trash can also wash ashore after high water. Trash doesn’t always stay where it’s thrown away. It can end up in other places via ditches and rivers. This is harmful to animals, nature, and the water.

Together, let's keep the Kaliwaal clean

The Litter Brigade has been working for years to create a litter-free environment. About 120 volunteers regularly pick up litter and participate in campaigns such as “Clean Rivers.” The municipality of West Maas en Waal is calling on residents and visitors to be mindful of their trash. Take it with you and throw it away in a trash can. This way, we can prevent trash from ending up in nature and the water, and keep this special area clean for everyone.
