West Maas en Waal starts first feasibility study into a heating network

This is an old post.

The municipality of West Maas en Waal will commence a feasibility study for a heating network in Beneden-Leeuwen in July 2025. This study is part of the municipality's ambition to become natural gas-free by no later than 2050.

The municipality of West Maas en Waal is initiating a feasibility study for a heating network this month in a neighborhood in Beneden-Leeuwen. This marks the first neighborhood in the municipality where the suitability and affordability of a heating network as a sustainable, natural gas-free heating solution for homes will be investigated.

The study is part of the municipality’s goal to become natural gas-free by 2050 at the latest. “We want to work with residents and partners to find alternatives that are suitable for the neighborhood,” says Marieke van den Boom, Alderman . “We see a district heating network as a potentially good alternative to natural gas in this neighborhood. But first, we’re going to thoroughly investigate whether it’s technically and financially feasible.”

Not a decision, but an exploratory study

The municipality emphasizes that this is a preliminary study. No decision has yet been made regarding the construction of a district heating network. The study will assess the possibilities and costs in Map. The impact on the neighborhood will also be examined.

Talking with residents

The municipality believes it is important to keep residents well-informed and involved in this process. Residents of this neighborhood have already been informed about this feasibility study. Municipal staff will soon be visiting the neighborhood to answer questions. They will also be stopping by a number of homes to speak with residents. In addition, residents can share their opinions and concerns through a questionnaire.

The rest of the municipality will follow later

“We’re taking it step by step to find alternatives to natural gas in our villages,” said Marieke van den Boom. “These are processes that take a long time. Of course, we’re involving the residents in this.”
