The war in Ukraine continues unabated. Currently, 96 Ukrainian refugees are being housed in municipal emergency shelters in Altforst and Wamel. This is in addition to 77 people who are being housed by private individuals.
Emergency shelter for additional refugees in Altforst
The war in Ukraine is still ongoing. There seems to be no end in sight. The influx of Ukrainian refugees also continues. That is why we want to expand the municipal emergency shelter in Altforst with a number of people.
The Ukrainians live on the upper floor of Yasemin. The term has been extended by another six months. The ground floor is empty. After renovation, there would be room for an additional number of Ukrainian refugees. In addition to the extra rooms, there will also be a recreation room. When the ground floor is ready, the refugees will be able to live there for at least six months.
Wamel emergency shelter is moving
Zorggroep Maas en Waal is going to renovate Huize Henricus. They have obtained the necessary permits. The plan is for the contractor to start the renovation around February 1, 2023.
The municipality has been looking for another shelter location. One has been found.
't Veerhuis in Wamel is being prepared for the Ukrainian refugees who currently live in Huize Henricus. But first, the building must be adapted to make it suitable for emergency shelter. The Ukrainians will move to their new accommodation by mid-January at the latest. The refugees will be able to live there for at least six months.
Reception of additional status holders
Status holders have a residence permit. They are part of Dutch society. Municipalities must offer status holders suitable housing.
The municipality of West Maas en Waal is meeting the current target. The national government has indicated that the target will be increased by 60-75% in the first half of 2023 compared to the second quarter of 2022.
The municipality is looking at how we can meet this target and is considering the provision of temporary housing. The municipality is currently identifying where these homes could be located. The intention is to offer combined housing in these homes for status holders, emergency seekers, and other house hunters.
Far from home for the refugees
The Ukrainian refugees who are being sheltered in the municipality of West Maas en Waal have found a home far from home, whether in private or municipal shelters. They feel the hospitality of our residents. They are involved in many activities. Almost all of them are working or going to school. Young people also contribute significantly to this hospitality.
