Walking during World Alzheimer's Day in West Maas en Waal

Sunday, September 21, 2025, is World Alzheimer's Day. On this day, the municipality of West Maas en Waal will reflect on dementia and continue its journey toward a dementia-friendly society. Sociom, the municipality's welfare organization, is organizing an educational and inspiring walk in Bloemenpark Appeltern on behalf of the municipality.

Reflecting on dementia together

The municipality of West Maas en Waal is working to create a dementia-friendly society. A society in which everyone recognizes dementia and knows how to deal with it. This allows people with dementia to participate in society for as long as possible. A good example of this is the Jumbo supermarket in Beneden-Leeuwen. This store has been recognized as a dementia-friendly business. Sociom also provides training courses in the municipality on how to deal with dementia.

What is possible with dementia?

Alderman Rob Reuvers on World Alzheimer's Day: "I think it's important that we pay extra attention to dementia in the municipality on September 21. This disease has a major impact on the lives of people with dementia and on their family and friends. I also think it's important that residents see and hear what you can still do with dementia. I hope that many residents will sign up for the walk and talk about it together. Whether you have dementia yourself, know someone who does, or just want to know more about what you can do and arrange: everyone is welcome. It's about awareness, preparation, and above all, what is still possible."

Walking in Appeltern Flower Park

Sociom is organizing an interactive walk in Bloemenpark Appeltern during World Alzheimer's Day. All residents of West Maas en Waal are welcome to register. Participants are expected at the park entrance at 11:00 a.m. During the walk, they will receive information about dementia and how to deal with it in various ways. The walk will conclude with lunch around 12:30 p.m.
