Walking Event on World Alzheimer's Day in West Maas en Waal

Sunday, September 21, 2025, is World Alzheimer’s Day. Sociom is organizing an interactive walk in Bloemenpark Appeltern. During the walk, participants will learn about dementia and how to cope with it.

Sunday, September 21, 2025, is World Alzheimer’s Day. On this day, the municipality West Maas en Waal will West Maas en Waal on dementia and continue its journey toward a dementia-friendly society. Sociom, the municipality’s social services organization, is organizing an educational and inspiring walk in Bloemenpark Appeltern on behalf of the municipality.

Reflecting on dementia together

The municipality West Maas en Waal to create a dementia-friendly community—a community where everyone recognizes dementia and knows how to deal with it. This allows people with dementia to remain active in the community for as long as possible. A good example of this is the Jumbo supermarket in Beneden-Leeuwen. This store has been recognized as a dementia-friendly business. Sociom also provides training sessions in the municipality on how to deal with dementia.

What is possible with dementia?

Alderman Reuvers on World Alzheimer’s Day: “I think it’s important that we pay special attention to dementia in our municipality on September 21. This disease has a major impact on the lives of people with dementia, as well as on their family and friends. I also think it’s important for residents to see and hear what you can still do with dementia. I hope many residents will sign up for the walk and discuss this together. Whether you have dementia yourself, know someone who does, or simply want to learn more about what you can do and arrange: everyone is welcome. It’s about awareness, preparation, and above all, what is still possible.”

Walking in Appeltern Flower Park

On World Alzheimer's Day, Sociom is organizing an interactive walk in Bloemenpark Appeltern. All residents of West Maas en Waal sign up. Participants are expected to meet at the park entrance at 11:00 a.m. During the walk, they will learn about dementia and how to cope with it through various activities. The walk will conclude with lunch around 12:30 p.m.
