Walking during World Alzheimer's Day in West Maas en Waal

Sunday, September 21, 2025, is World Alzheimer’s Day. Sociom is organizing an interactive walk in Bloemenpark Appeltern. During the walk, participants will learn about dementia and how to cope with it.

Sunday, September 21, 2025, is World Alzheimer's Day. On this day, the municipality of West Maas en Waal reflects on dementia and continues its path towards a dementia-friendly society. Sociom, the municipality's welfare organization, is organizing an educational and inspiring walk in Bloemenpark Appeltern on behalf of the municipality.

Reflecting on dementia together

The municipality of West Maas en Waal is working towards a dementia-friendly society. A society where everyone recognizes dementia and knows how to deal with it, allowing people with dementia to participate for as long as possible. A good example of this is the Jumbo supermarket in Beneden-Leeuwen, which is recognized as a dementia-friendly business. Sociom also provides training in the municipality on how to deal with dementia.

What is possible with dementia?

Alderman Reuvers on World Alzheimer’s Day: “I think it’s important that we pay special attention to dementia in our municipality on September 21. This disease has a major impact on the lives of people with dementia, as well as on their family and friends. I also think it’s important for residents to see and hear what you can still do with dementia. I hope many residents will sign up for the walk and discuss this together. Whether you have dementia yourself, know someone who does, or simply want to learn more about what you can do and arrange: everyone is welcome. It’s about awareness, preparation, and above all, what is still possible.”

Walking in Appeltern Flower Park

During World Alzheimer's Day, Sociom is organizing an interactive walk in Bloemenpark Appeltern. All residents of West Maas en Waal can sign up. Participants are expected at the park entrance at 11:00 AM. During the walk, they will receive explanations about dementia and how to deal with it in various ways. The walk concludes with lunch around 12:30 PM.
