Why are traffic lights being installed on Van Heemstraweg?

This is an old post.

We have read the many comments regarding the installation of the permanent traffic lights on Van Heemstraweg in Beneden-Leeuwen. In this post, we would like to provide further clarification regarding this decision. We hope this will help you better understand the situation. At a later date, we will share a more detailed explanation in the municipal news section of the Maas&Waler and on our social media channels.

Why a traffic light?

  • This is the best solution to ensure that the extra traffic generated by the opening of the Aldi can safely flow toward Van Heemstraweg.
  • If we had installed a permanent traffic light right away, Van Heemstraweg would have been closed before the holidays. This would have made it harder to reach the shops and businesses. That is why a temporary traffic light has been installed.

Why not another solution?

  • A roundabout wouldn't work here because there isn't enough space.
  • A median strip only works if it runs from roundabout to roundabout. This isn’t possible here because it would block all the other side streets and driveways. Furthermore, emergency services would no longer be able to get through in an emergency.

The final traffic light system is being fine-tuned. It uses loops embedded in the asphalt and a customizable program to ensure that traffic flows as smoothly as possible.
