Why are traffic lights being installed on Van Heemstraweg?

This is an old message.

We read the many comments about the installation of permanent traffic lights on Van Heemstraweg in Beneden-Leeuwen. In this message, we provide more information about this decision. We hope this will lead to greater understanding. At a later date, we will share a more detailed explanation via the municipal news in the Maas&Waler and on our social media channels.

Why a traffic light?

  • This is the best solution to ensure that the extra traffic caused by the arrival of Aldi can safely exit onto Van Heemstraweg.
  • If we had installed a permanent traffic light immediately, Van Heemstraweg would have been closed before the holidays. This would have made it more difficult to reach the shops and businesses. That is why a temporary traffic light has been installed.

Why not another solution?

  • A roundabout is not suitable here because there is not enough space.
  • A median strip only works if it runs from roundabout to roundabout. This is not possible here because it would also block all other side streets and driveways. In addition, emergency services would no longer be able to pass in an emergency.

The final traffic light will be properly adjusted. It works with loops in the asphalt and an adaptable program, so that traffic can continue to flow as smoothly as possible.
