Preliminary designs for youth centers

In February, the Board of Mayor and Alderman decided that there will be two places in the municipality of West Maas en Waal where young people can meet. Preliminary designs have been made and preliminary locations designated for the youth meeting places (JOPs).
Young people's wishes
Following the decision, the project group got to work. The project group consists of the contracted project agency, community police officers, youth workers, and officials from various departments. To determine suitable locations and formats for the youth meeting places, the municipality began consulting with young people in the community.
Tentative locations
The council has identified two potential locations. This decision was based on information gathered during the youth engagement process. They also took into account the knowledge and expertise of the project group. Factors considered included the potential for (social) oversight, municipal ownership, and space for physical activity.
Engagement with local residents and young people
Residents living near the proposed locations and young people will receive an invitation to a meeting. During the meeting, they will be shown the preliminary designs for the youth gathering places. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions and provide feedback. The project office will record and summarize the feedback and suggestions. Where possible, these will be incorporated into the design. Afterward, the City Council will make a final decision on the locations.
“Space for Youth”
The JOPs stem from the “Space for Youth” project. The project aims to create a safe, healthy, supportive, and positive environment for young people. The project has shown that young people, professionals, and parents alike need more places for young people to gather.
