“Proposed decision on elementary school strikes at the heart of Altforst
The Municipality of West Maas en Waal is surprised by the proposed decision of Stichting Groeisaam to close De Tweestroom primary school in Altforst as of August 1, 2026.

Ensuring a high quality of life
Alderman Reuvers: “This strikes at the heart of Altforst. A primary school is more than just a place to learn; it’s a community hub and vital to the quality of life here. Closing the school would undermine the village’s social cohesion. We will do everything in our power, working together with residents and partners, to explore possible solutions that Altforst the quality of life in Altforst .”
Proposed decision by Groeisaam
According to the Groeisaam Foundation, closure is inevitable due to chronically low enrollment, pressure on educational quality, and financial shortfalls. The school board maintains that alternatives such as a merger or continuing to operate independently are not feasible. This is a proposed decision. The De Tweestroom parent-teacher association has been asked for advice, and discussions with parents will follow. Rob Reuvers: “Ultimately, the school board will decide whether the school will be permanently closed or can remain open. We understand that Stichting Groeisaam has to make difficult choices for De Tweestroom. But we feel that the impact on the village has not been sufficiently taken into account.”
The municipality emphasizes that it has been in discussions with Groeisaam for years. For example, the municipality has proposed several alternative scenarios. The municipality’s goal has always been to keep the school open, as this is very important for the quality of life in Altforst.
