Preparations for “ONS Thuis” in Alphen begun
The De Kernen Housing Foundation and the municipality West Maas en Waal signed a contract with the social services organization Sociom to begin recruiting and supporting volunteers for ONS Thuis Alphen. This is a new housing project in the former Edohof on Schoolstraat for six single residents, ranging in age but all 55 or older. Each resident has their own living space and can use a common area and courtyard garden. Volunteers assist them with activities as needed.
Connectivity and Customization
Every resident has their own personal preferences. These are brought together. That is why Ellen Jagtenberg, the project coordinator for this initiative, has been commissioned by Sociom to recruit volunteers to establish and support the social aspect of this living arrangement. This is done in collaboration with the residents and is always tailored to their needs. People are free to spend time together. Thanks to the communal space in the heart of the building, a sense of community develops naturally.
Improving quality of life
The three parties are eager to collaborate on this innovative housing model for residents who are interested in it. “I believe in a community where you can grow old in a pleasant way,” says Marinus Kempe, director of De Kernen. Former Alderman van Swam emphasizes this: “ONS Thuis means staying in your own home longer in Alphen.” Sociom already supports volunteer advisors and other volunteers. That is why it also recruits and mentors the volunteers for this project. “The residential and social functions offer fellow villagers aged 55 and older the opportunity to remain active together for longer and also improve the quality of life,” conclude Ellen Jagtenberg and Roland van der Heijden, director of Sociom.
