Plenty of new housing on the way, but no new requests for now

This is an old post.

The municipality is extending the temporary moratorium on new housing development applications until January 1, 2027. Approximately 1,200 homes are planned, and the projected housing need through 2045 is about 1,170 homes. There are more than enough homes in the planning stages.

The municipality of West Maas en Waal extends the temporary halt on new housing development requests until January 1, 2027. This does not mean that no homes will be built. Approximately 1,200 homes are currently planned. The expected housing demand in the municipality until 2045 is around 1,170 homes. This means there is more than sufficient housing supply in preparation.

A healthy balance in growth

“It may sound contradictory given all the news reports about the housing shortage,” says Alderman van den Boom, “but it certainly isn’t. There are more than enough homes in the pipeline, both on the Maas and Waalkant sides. This measure ensures that we will continue to build the kind of homes that are truly needed in our villages. It is our responsibility to ensure a good balance in housing growth. We want to build homes where there is a need—for now, but certainly also for the future.”

Tailored solutions to preserve the small-scale character

Marieke van den Boom: “It is undesirable to build far more than the housing demand warrants. That could lead to vacancies in the future. Or we would end up building for people outside our municipality. In addition, we believe it is important that growth is in line with the size and scale of the municipality. We want to preserve the small-scale character of our villages. That is why this pause is absolutely necessary,” the Alderman .

Commitment to implementing plans

In the coming period, the municipality will be fully committed to further developing and implementing existing plans. In addition, the municipality will be focusing even more on creating a good living environment. Until January 1, 2027, the municipality will not be processing any new housing development plans. This measure applies only to housing development requests. Residents and businesses may continue to submit other requests as usual starting July 1. More information on this can be found on the municipality’s website.
