Plenty of housing construction on the way, no new requests for the time being
The municipality is extending the temporary halt on new housing applications until January 1, 2027. Around 1,200 homes are planned, while the expected housing demand until 2045 is approximately 1,170 homes. There are more than enough homes in the pipeline.

The municipality of West Maas en Waal is extending the temporary halt on new housing applications until January 1, 2027. This does not mean that no homes will be built. Around 1,200 homes are currently still in the planning stage. The expected housing demand in the municipality until 2045 is approximately 1,170 homes. This means that there is more than enough supply of homes in the pipeline.
Good balance in growth
"It may sound contradictory given all the news reports about the housing shortage," says Alderman Marieke van den Boom, "but it certainly isn't. There are more than enough homes planned, both on the Maas and Waalkant sides. This measure will ensure that we continue to build the type of homes that are really needed in our villages. It is our responsibility to ensure a good balance in housing growth. We want to build homes where they are needed, both now and in the future."
Customization to protect small-scale character
Marieke van den Boom: "It is undesirable to build much more than the housing demand. That could lead to vacancy in the future. Or we would be building for people outside our municipality. In addition, we believe it is important that growth is in line with the size and scale of the municipality. We want to protect the small-scale character of our villages. That is why this pause is absolutely necessary," concludes the alderman.
Commitment to realizing plans
In the coming period, the municipality will focus fully on further developing and implementing the existing plans. In addition, the municipality will pay even more attention to creating a good living environment. Until January 1, 2027, the municipality will not consider any new housing construction plans. This measure only applies to housing construction requests. Residents and entrepreneurs can continue to submit other requests as usual from July 1. More information about this can be found on the municipality's website.
