Deleting sensitive personal data

What is it?

The municipality keeps personal data on all residents in the Personal Records Database (BRP). The municipality needs this data when, for example, you get married or your passport expires. If necessary, the municipality may also share your data with other government agencies, such as the Tax and Customs Administration or the police. Or with organizations such as pension funds and housing associations.

You can only have information about your adoption, your child whom you gave up for adoption, or your gender reassignment removed from the BRP.

How does it work?

If you were adopted, you can have the following information removed:

  • The name you had before the adoption.
  • The names of your biological parents or caregivers during the period prior to the adoption.
  • The nationality you had before the adoption.
  • Information about the municipality, the address where you were registered, and your residence in the municipality during the period prior to the adoption.
  • Your possible departure from the Netherlands.

If you have changed your gender, you can have the following data removed:

  • Information about your name.
  • Information about your gender.
  • Use of the surname of your spouse, registered partner, or ex-partner.

What should I do?

  • Request the municipality to delete your data.
  • Please indicate which specific data is involved.
  • If you are younger than 16, your parents must request this from the municipality.

What do I need?

  • adoption or gender reassignment documents
  • your valid proof of identity

How long will it take?

The municipality will delete your data within 4 weeks and send you a letter as soon as this has been done.
