Apply for a traffic exemption

What is it?

Sometimes you need a permit if you want to do something on or to public roads. For example, if you:

  • you wish to place a moving truck or crane on the road (which will partially close the road)
  • places structures
  • organizes bike tours or events

You must apply for an exemption from the road authority.

Where should I apply for an exemption?

  • for national roads: Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment
  • for provincial roads: Provincial Executive
  • for roads managed by the water board: the water board
  • for other public roads: the municipality
  • for vehicle requirements: the RDW

What should I do?

If the roads are managed by the municipality, you must apply for the exemption from the municipality. Include the following information with your application:

  • place, date, and time of your activity
  • reason and necessity for the exemption

What do I need?

  • your valid proof of identity
