Apply for a traffic exemption

What is it?

Sometimes you need a permit if you want to do something on or along a public road. For example, if you:

  • you want to park a moving truck or crane on the road (which will result in a partial road closure)
  • constructs buildings
  • organizes bike tours or events

To do this, you must apply for an exemption from the road authority.

Where do I apply for an exemption?

  • For national highways: Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment
  • for provincial roads: the Provincial Executive
  • for roads managed by the water board: the water board
  • for other public roads: the municipality
  • For vehicle requirements: the RDW

What should I do?

If the roads in question are managed by the municipality, you must apply for the exemption from the municipality. Please include the following information with your application:

  • location, date, and time of your activity
  • reason for and necessity of the exemption

What do I need?

  • your valid ID
