Moving abroad
What is it?
- Before leaving the Netherlands, you must notify the municipality of your departure (emigration).
- You emigrate if you spend at least 8 months abroad within 1 year.
- These 8 months do not have to be consecutive.
How does it work?
You can report your departure from the Netherlands online if all residents of the address are emigrating at the same time.
If you live with several people at one address and not everyone is moving with you, then everyone who is moving with you must visit the municipality in person. This also applies to children under the age of 18.
Who can report an emigration?
- anyone aged 16 or older
- parents, guardians, or caregivers for children under the age of 16
- parents for their adult child or children living at home (only if parents and children living at home move abroad together)
- cohabiting spouses or registered partners for each other (only if spouses and partners move abroad together)
- adult children for resident parent(s) (only if adult resident children and parent(s) move abroad together)
- the guardian for a person who has been placed under guardianship.
It is not possible for an authorized representative to report a move abroad.
What should I do?
You must notify the municipality of your departure at least 5 days in advance. Please provide the following information:
- the names and dates of birth of family members who are emigrating with you
- your previous address
- your new address
- the date of emigration
Would you like to report your move in person at the municipality?
Then you need to make an appointment. Make sure you have all the necessary documents with you during the appointment.
