Getting married in the Netherlands if you live abroad
What is it?
Even if you do not live in the Netherlands, you can still get married or enter into a registered partnership here. However, you or your partner must have Dutch nationality. This also applies if you wish to enter into a registered partnership.
You must submit a written notification to the municipality of The Hague. Submit the notification no earlier than one year before your wedding date. You have until two weeks before the wedding date to submit the notification. The municipality will check whether you are eligible to marry or enter into a partnership.
How does it work?
The municipality will check whether you:
- You must be 18 years of age or older. Are you younger than 18? Then your parents or the court must give their consent. If you have a child or are pregnant, you may enter into a registered partnership from the age of 16.
- you are unmarried and not registered as someone's partner.
- you are not a direct relative of your partner (not a parent or child, not a grandparent or grandchild, not a brother or sister, and not a half-brother or half-sister).
- under guardianship. If you are under guardianship, you need permission from the guardian or subdistrict court.
