Transportation of hazardous materials

What is it?

  • It is prohibited to transport, load, or unload hazardous materials within the municipality.
  • In the Netherlands, certain hazardous substances are subject to mandatory routing requirements. Some municipalities and provinces indicate the mandatory route with traffic signs. You can obtain information about these routes from your local or regional fire department.
  • If you wish to deviate from the designated route within the municipality—for example, to load or unload—you must apply for an exemption from the municipality.

What should I do?

You must apply for the exemption with the municipality. Please include the following information with your application:

  • the materials you wish to transport and in what quantities
  • the loading or unloading location within the municipality
  • the desired route
  • the time of transport
  • your company name
  • approval of the vehicle by the Dutch Vehicle Authority (RDW)
  • your permit and driver's certificate for the transport of hazardous materials

Additional information

  • You must not transport hazardous materials in slippery conditions or dense fog.
  • If these conditions persist for a long time, and you can demonstrate that the transport is urgent, you may be granted an exemption from this transport ban.
  • You must apply for the exemption for the transport of hazardous substances from the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate.
