Transport of hazardous substances

What is it?

  • It is prohibited to transport, load, or unload hazardous substances in the municipality.
  • In the Netherlands, certain hazardous substances are subject to mandatory transport routes. Some municipalities and provinces indicate the mandatory route with traffic signs. Information about these routes can be obtained from the municipal or regional fire department.
  • If you wish to deviate from the mandatory route within the municipality, for example to load or unload, you must apply for an exemption from the municipality.

What should I do?

You can apply for the exemption at the municipality. Include the following information with your application:

  • the substances you wish to transport and in what quantities
  • the loading or unloading location in the municipality
  • the desired route
  • the time of transport
  • your company name
  • approval of the vehicle by the National Road Transport Authority (RDW)
  • your license and driver's certificate for the transport of hazardous substances

Additional information

  • In case of slippery conditions or dense fog, you are not permitted to transport hazardous substances.
  • If these circumstances persist for a long time and you can demonstrate that the transport is urgent, you can obtain an exemption from this transport ban.
  • You apply for the exemption for the transport of dangerous substances from the Human Environment and Transport Inspectorate.
