Tourist signage
What is it?
Tourist signage helps road users reach their destination quickly and safely. Business owners can apply to the municipality for tourist signage (a brown sign).
A brown sign is used only for:
- Culture/Daytime Recreation
- tourism/vacation stays
- restaurants, bars, and sports facilities and grounds.
How does it work?
We only install brown signs where necessary. These signs are not intended to serve as advertising. The guidelines we use to determine eligibility for tourist signage can be found in the Site Signage Policy at .
You can find out if your business is eligible for a brown sign by following the step-by-step guide "Applying for Tourist Signage."
Requests for tourist signage:
- Please send an email to info@westmaasenwaal.nl requesting that a tourist sign be installed.
- The email should include:
- your company name
- contact person details
- the address and name to be displayed on the brown signs
- an explanation of how the company fits into the recreation and tourism sector. You may use the tourism signage flowchart for this. Also include the opening hours, whether everyone is allowed to enter during opening hours, and how you handle tourists who wish to visit (the activity). - The municipality will determine whether the business qualifies as a recreational facility and is therefore eligible to use these signs. If this is not the case, you will receive a written denial from us. You may always file an appeal against this decision.
- Does the application meet the Requirements? If so, we will forward it to Uiterwaarde. Uiterwaarde will contact you and then send you a quote that includes the sign design, the visual specifications, installation, and maintenance. Our traffic experts will review the visual specifications before you receive them.
- A contract for the maintenance of the brown signs is required. Uiterwaarde will draw up a contract in consultation with you.
More information
There are no longer any subsidies available for the purchase of brown signs. The cost of the sign and its maintenance are entirely the responsibility of the applicant.
The standardized signage system complies with European guidelines (CROW) and ensures that motorists are effectively directed to recreational businesses.
