Tourist signage

What is it?

Tourist signage helps road users reach their destination quickly and safely. Businesses can apply to the municipality for tourist signage (a brown sign).

A brown sign is only used in the following cases:

  • culture/day recreation
  • tourism/residential recreation
  • hospitality and sports facilities and grounds.

How does it work?

We only place brown signs in necessary locations. The signs are not intended for advertising purposes. The guidelines we use to determine eligibility for tourist signage can be found in the Object Signage Policy.

You can check whether your business is eligible for a brown sign by following the step-by-step plan 'Applying for tourist signage'.

Requests for tourist signage:

  1. Please send an email to info@westmaasenwaal.nl requesting the installation of a tourist sign.
  2. The email should contain:
    - the name of your company
    - contact details
    - the address and name to be displayed on the brown signs
    - evidence of how the company fits within the recreation and tourism sector. You can use the tourist signage flow chart for this. Also state the opening hours, whether everyone is allowed to enter during opening hours, and how you deal with tourists who want to visit (the activity).
  3. The municipality will assess whether the company falls under the category of recreation and is therefore eligible to use these signs. If this is not the case, you will receive a written rejection from us. You can always submit an objection to this decision.
  4. Does the application meet the conditions? Then we will forward it to Uiterwaarde. Uiterwaarde will contact you and send you a quote with the design of the sign, the visual specifications, the installation, and maintenance. Our traffic experts will check the visual specifications before you receive them.
  5. A contract for the maintenance of the brown signs is mandatory. Uiterwaarde will draw up a contract in consultation with you.

More information

There are no longer any subsidies available for the purchase of brown signs. The costs of the sign and its maintenance are entirely borne by the applicant.

The uniform signage system complies with European guidelines (CROW) and ensures that traffic is properly directed to recreational businesses.
