Guidance on applying for a reserved parking space for people with disabilities
The municipality can reserve a disabled parking space for you if:
- You have a driver's disability parking permit;
- you are unable to park on your own property;
- the desired location of the accessible parking space is on municipal property;
- setting this location as a parking spot does not create a traffic hazard for you;
- parking pressure in the area is so high that it is not uncommon to be unable to park your car near your home;
- Local conditions do not preclude the construction of the parking lot (each proposed location is assessed to determine whether it is feasible and desirable).
- the police have no traffic-related objections to a disabled parking space at the requested location.
Do you only have a disabled parking permit for a passenger?
There are additional requirements you must meet to qualify for an individual disabled parking space. The law stipulates that the use of a disabled parking permit must be directly related to the transportation of the person with a disability. We must therefore exercise caution when designating reserved parking spaces for holders of a passenger disabled parking permit. The driver of a car has the option of dropping off the person with a disability near the front door and then looking for a parking space. In your case, this may be difficult or time-consuming due to the severity of the disability. You can indicate this on the form.
Cost of an individual disabled parking space
There are costs associated with setting up a disabled parking space. These include administrative fees and material costs. The costs are passed on to you and amount to €536. If you have a new or different car and the sign needs to be changed, the cost for this is €160. If you move and would like a reserved parking space at your new residence, this costs €225.50. These amounts are taken from the fee schedule of the 2026 Administrative Fees Regulation. The signs remain the property of the municipality.
Duration and procedure
Once the application is received, the municipality will review it for completeness and accuracy, and verify the location (see explanation above). The police will also be consulted. Once the application is approved, you will receive a confirmation letter and an invoice. If the parking space is not granted, you will also be notified by mail. If you receive the approval letter, this does not mean that the municipality can immediately install the signs. The signs will be ordered, and the municipality will proceed with the following procedure.
Once the application has been approved, the next steps will begin. The Municipal Executive must issue a traffic order for the reserved disabled parking space. The traffic order is published in the Government Gazette and an announcement is made in the municipal notices. From the date of publication, the traffic order is available for public inspection, and a 6-week period begins during which objections may be filed. The municipality’s experience is that objections to a disabled parking space are rare. We therefore do not wish to wait for the objection period to expire. We may only install the signs starting the day after publication. The total processing time may take several weeks, depending on the situation.
