Explanation regarding the application for a reserved disabled parking space

The municipality can reserve a disabled parking space for you if:

  • you have a disabled parking permit for drivers;
  • you do not have the option to park on your own property;
  • the desired location of the disabled parking space is on municipal land;
  • setting up this location as a parking lot does not create an unsafe traffic situation for you;
  • parking pressure in the area is so high that you are often unable to park your car near your home;
  • the local characteristics do not prevent the construction of the parking lot (each requested location is assessed to determine whether it is possible and desirable).
  • the police have no traffic-related objections to a disabled parking space at the requested location.

Do you only have a disabled parking permit for passengers?

Additional requirements apply before you are eligible for an individual disabled parking space. The law stipulates that the use of a disabled parking permit must be directly related to the transport of the disabled person. We must therefore be cautious about creating reserved parking spaces for holders of a disabled parking permit for passengers. The driver of a car has the option of bringing the disabled person close to the front door and then looking for a parking space. In your case, this may be difficult or time-consuming due to the extent of the disability. You can indicate this on the form.

Costs for individual disabled parking spaces

There are costs associated with setting up a disabled parking space. These include administrative fees and material costs. The costs are passed on and amount to €536. If you have a new/different car and the sub-sign needs to be changed, the cost for this is €160. If you move house and would like a reserved parking space at your new home, this will cost €225.50. These are the amounts from the fee schedule of the 2026 fee regulation. The signs remain the property of the municipality.

Duration and procedure

After receiving the application, the municipality will check it for completeness and accuracy and verify the location (see explanation above). Advice will also be sought from the police. Once the application has been approved, you will receive confirmation by letter and an invoice. If the parking space is not granted, you will also receive notification by letter. Receipt of the letter of approval does not mean that the municipality can install the signs immediately. The signs will be ordered and the municipality will proceed with the procedure below.

Once the application has been approved, the next stage of the process begins. The Municipal Executive must issue a traffic decision for the reserved disabled parking space. The traffic decision is published in the Government Gazette and a notice is published in the municipal notices. From the date of publication, the traffic decision is available for inspection and a six-week period begins during which objections can be lodged. The municipality's experience is that there are hardly any objections to disabled parking spaces. We therefore do not want to wait for the objection period to end. We are only allowed to put up the signs from the day after publication. The total processing time can take several weeks, depending on the situation.
