Class T driver's license

What is it?

You need a T driver’s license if you want to drive a tractor on public roads. With a T driver’s license, you are authorized to drive an agricultural and forestry tractor (LBT) with a trailer. You are also authorized to drive a low-speed motor vehicle (MMBS) with a trailer.

To obtain a T driver’s license, you must take a written and road test at the CBR. You may take the written test starting at age 15.5. You may take the road test starting at age 16. If you obtain a Category C (truck) driver’s license, Category T will automatically be added to your license.

How does it work?

You don't always need a T license. In the following cases, you are not required to have a T license:

  • You never drive on public roads. For example, when driving a tractor in a field.
  • You're driving a machine
    • that cannot tow a trailer or a detachable machine.
    • that is no wider than 130 cm.
    • intended for mowing, weed control, sweeping, snow removal, de-icing, or picking up dog waste.

What should I do?

Category T for driver’s licenses was introduced on July 1, 2015. Did you have a tractor certificate before that date? If so, you can exchange that certificate for a Category T driver’s license. You can do this through the RDW. Be sure to exchange your certificate before July 1, 2016.

Did you already have a driver’s license before July 1, 2015? In the following cases, category T will be added to your license when you renew it:

  • Your Class B driver's license was issued before July 1, 2015.
  • You must be 18 years of age or older at the time of application.
  • Category B on your driver's license has not been revoked.

Approach

Please bring the following:

  • a valid form of identification
  • your old driver's license, if you have one
  • A clear, well-lit passport photo that

You pay for the driver's license when you apply.

Term

You can pick up your new driver’s license after 5 business days. Do you need your driver’s license sooner? You can request an expedited driver’s license. If you apply before 2:00 p.m., you can usually pick it up the next business day.

You have 3 months to pick up your driver's license.
