Working Together to Create a Dementia-Friendly Society

This is an old post.

A dementia-friendly society is one in which everyone recognizes dementia and knows how to deal with it. The municipality of West Maas en Waal wants to know what the information needs of residents are regarding dementia, and to what extent society is already dementia-friendly. Therefore, they have drawn up a questionnaire.

Meeting on dementia at MFA De Rosmolen a great success

In a dementia-friendly society, people with dementia and their loved ones can participate for as long as possible. This starts with knowledge about dementia. For these reasons, the municipality of West Maas en Waal organized a meeting about dementia on October 31 at MFA De Rosmolen. The meeting was a success and well-attended.

Alderman on the dementia-friendly society: “I think it’s important that we work together to create a dementia-friendly society. To me, a dementia-friendly society is one in which everyone knows what dementia is and knows how to deal with it—from your neighbor and the baker to the supermarket clerk and the landscaper. I’m glad that we’ve commissioned the social welfare organization Sociom to work on this since 2024. They can support residents, associations, organizations, and businesses in becoming dementia-friendly.”

The questionnaire is intended for all residents of the municipality of West Maas en Waal. The questionnaire can be completed until Sunday, December 8.

Take a (free) training course offered by the organization Samendementievriendelijk

In a dementia-friendly society, people with dementia and their loved ones can remain active for as long as possible. This starts with understanding dementia: what is it, and how do you recognize it? With this knowledge, we can support one another so that someone with dementia can, for example, continue to run errands and remain a member of a club.
The organization Samendementievriendelijk offers (free) training courses to help residents with this. There are online training courses for hairdressers, for example, as well as in-person training sessions for clubs and organizations.
