Violence against women must stop. The mayors of Beuningen, Druten, Heumen, West Maas en Waal Wijchen are joining forces to make this message clear during Orange the World. This global campaign draws attention to violence against women and girls from November 25 (the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) through December 10 (Human Rights Day).
Orange is the color of Orange the World. This color symbolizes the sunrise: a new beginning, in which women and girls can live in safety. This year’s theme is: “Safe, everywhere and always.” Violence against women is not confined to any one place. It happens everywhere: on the street, on public transportation, when going out, at work, and at home.
Mayor Sengers of the municipality of Druten emphasizes that we must take responsibility together: “We must combat violence against anyone. However, women and girls are more often the victims worldwide—both far away and right here at home. And why? Because they are women? We are joining forces to ensure their safety and freedom.”
Mayor Minses of the municipality of Heumen: “Women and girls must be able to feel safe everywhere and at all times,” he says. “Free from violence and aggression. We can only achieve this if we tackle it together.”
Mayor Van Neerbos of the municipality West Maas en Waal the role of men in this fight: “Unfortunately, violence against women is still not discussed enough among men. However, this is necessary to break the taboo.”
