Smoke-free playgrounds in West Maas en Waal
The municipal playgrounds in West Maas en Waal have been smoke-free since early May. May 31st is World No Tobacco Day, a good moment to draw extra attention to this.
Smoking and secondhand smoke are harmful
The goal of smoke-free playgrounds is to protect children from the temptation to smoke and the harmful effects of secondhand smoke. You can recognize smoke-free playgrounds by a sign or tile featuring the “Smoke-Free Generation” logo. This asks everyone who enters the area to keep the playground smoke-free from now on, in order to set a good example for children.
Smoke-Free Generation
The “Toward a Smoke-Free Generation” movement is working toward a society in which we protect growing children from tobacco smoke and the temptation to start smoking. To achieve this, we need to set a good example together in places where children gather—and make those places smoke-free. In the lives of growing children, a playground is an important place. That is why a smoke-free playground contributes to the realization of a Smoke-Free Generation.
What changes are coming to the playgrounds?

Alderman Reuvers: “Everyone is and will always be welcome at the playgrounds, including smokers. However, we do ask smokers to smoke out of sight of children and outside the playground. This also applies to vaping, e-cigarettes, and related products. We believe it is important for children to grow up healthy and safe. That is why we wholeheartedly support the Smoke-Free Generation.”
How do you approach someone who is smoking at a playground?
Approaching someone can be nerve-wracking. But in the end, it helps create a smoke-free generation. Here are some helpful tips:
- It is important to speak to people in a friendly manner;
- Always assume that someone is unaware of the smoke-free policy. Ask them if they saw the sign or the paving stone near the playground;
- Don't point fingers; instead, let the person know where they can and cannot smoke;
- Also explain that you want to set a good example for children, especially at the playground. And that’s why it’s important to smoke out of sight of children.
