At the request of the municipality or on its own initiative, the Court of Audit advises the municipal council on a variety of topics. The Court of Audit operates independently of the municipality and conducts investigations.

As of January 1, 2025, the municipality of West Maas en Waal will be affiliated with the Rivierenland Audit Office.

Objectives

The Court of Audit wishes to contribute to testing and improving:

  • The effectiveness and efficiency of municipal policy
  • The effectiveness and efficiency of the management of the municipal organization
  • Checking the legality

In addition, the audit office wants to contribute to greater transparency in municipal actions and strengthen public accountability.

Method and resources

In an audit, municipal policy and its implementation are assessed against the municipality's objectives. The municipal council can use the information to make adjustments if desired. In addition to steering policy in general terms, this also allows the municipal council to steer more specific aspects of policy.

The audit office determines the topics for investigation itself, but anyone can submit topics, for example the council factions, the mayor and aldermen, the civil service organization, the audit office itself, and other audit offices. Residents can also submit topics.
