Plants for Pavement: Together, Let’s Make Our Towns Greener!

On Saturday, April 12, residents of West Maas en Waal can participate in a special campaign: exchange up to 5 m² of tiles (these can also be pavers) per household and receive free plants! With this campaign, the municipality, together with its residents, aims to contribute to more biodiversity and make the villages greener. The tile exchange campaign is a step towards a more climate-friendly and greener living environment.
Healthy living environment
Greenery in the garden isn’t just beautiful—it’s also functional. Plants promote biodiversity, improve drainage during heavy rainfall, and help keep the area cooler in the summer. The municipality, together with a group of dedicated volunteers, has chosen hardy plants that attract birds and insects.
A win for all of us
Alderman Jan Slootweg encourages residents to take part in this green initiative: “Every tile that makes way for greenery is a win for all of us. More plants in the garden mean less flooding, more birds and insects, and a more pleasant living environment. I invite everyone to come exchange tiles on Saturday, April 12, and join us in making the municipality greener. But please register in advance.”
Choosing plants for April 3
“Good to know,” says Evert Jan Slootweg, “please let us know by April 2 at the latest how many square meters of tiles you’d like to turn in and choose which plants you’d like. We’ll be ordering them in advance. That way, we can be sure everyone gets the plants of their choice. And we hope this will help us avoid long wait times.” The promotion is limited to a maximum of 5 square meters of tiles per household.
Residents can drop off their tiles on Saturday, April 12, between 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. at De Onderstal, next to the municipal yard in Beneden-Leeuwen. The direction of traffic is indicated by signs.
