My passport or ID card has been lost or stolen

  • Has your passport or ID card been lost or stolen? If so, you can apply for a new one. You can do this in person at city hall.
  • Do you need to travel immediately? If so, you can apply for an emergency passport from the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee.

How much does it cost?

The fees for a Dutch ID card are:

  • For persons under 18:€43.20
  • For individuals 18 years of age and older:€80.10

The cost of a passport is:

  • For persons under 18 years of age:€67.05
  • For individuals 18 years of age and older: €88.65

Do you need to apply for a travel document urgently? If so, you will be charged a surcharge of€60.30.

What should I do?

You must file a missing document report with the municipality. This is necessary to prevent misuse of your old passport or ID card and to apply for a new travel document.
You no longer need to file a police report, even if your passport or ID card has been stolen.

Report of a missing person

You are required to file a report of loss in order to apply for a new travel document. It is also recommended that you file a report of loss even if you do not need to apply for a new travel document because you still have another one. When you file a report of loss, the government records the document number of your lost passport orMap. This registration helps in the fight against identity fraud.

  • You must apply for a new passport or ID card in person at the municipal office.
  • Please fill out a form explaining how you lost the original document.
  • After you report it, the municipality will record the loss of your travel document. When checked, it will then appear that your travel document is invalid. This prevents it from being misused.
  • If youMap find your passport orMap , you must not use it anymore. YouMap your passport orMap to the local government so that it can be invalidated. Even if your passport orMap found, it will be invalidated. This is done to prevent misuse.
  • You can request a new document from the municipality.
  • You must pick up your passport or ID card in person. This must be done within 3 months of your application.

In some municipalities, it is possible to submit a missing person report in writing or electronically. Check with your municipality to see if this is possible.

Filing a theft claim with your insurance company

Has your passport or ID card been stolen, and are you insured against theft? If so, it’s a good idea to file a police report so you can provide proof.

Filing a tax return while abroad

Have you lost your passport or ID card while abroad? Report the loss to the local police immediately. You can then apply for an emergency document at the Dutch embassy or consulate. In the Netherlands, you do not need to file a report with the Dutch police. With the foreign police report, you can apply for a passport or ID card at your local municipality.

Apply for an emergency passport

What do I need?

  • A clear, recent passport photo taken no more than 6 months prior to the date of application. This passport photo must meet the requirements listed at .
  • if applicable, the police report from abroad if you lost your passport or ID card while abroad
  • debit card (or cash) for payment

How long does it take?

Your passport or ID card will usually be ready in 6 business days.

The municipality may need to conduct an investigation to verify your identity. In that case, it may take longer for you to receive your passport or ID card.
