About the city council
The municipal council is the highest authority within the municipality. The council determines the broad outlines of what happens in our municipality. It represents the interests of residents, businesses, and institutions. The municipal council consists of 17 representatives of the population. These council members are elected directly by the residents of the municipality every four years. The municipal council has three important tasks:
- Representation of the people
- Framing
- Control

Party followers
The political groups may work with group supporters. These are individuals who are not council members but who, at the request of a political group, provide support to the group members and who have been nominated as such by the political groups to the municipal council.
Presidium
The presidium consists of the chairpersons of the political groups represented in the municipal council and the deputy chairperson of the Federatie Dorpslijsten West Maas en Waal political group. The presidium meets on the Tuesday prior to the council meeting. Among other things, the presidium draws up the draft agendas for the roundtable discussions and the (advisory) council meetings. The meetings are open to the public. The presidium also makes recommendations to the municipal council on the organization of the council's work, its meetings, and roundtable discussions.
Coalition agreement
Following the local elections on March 16, 2022, FD West Maas en Waal and the CDA will form a coalition. FD West Maas en Waal consists of the parties FD Partij Beneden-Leeuwen, F.D. Dreumel, F.D. Maasdorpen, F.D. Boven-Leeuwen, and F.D. Wamel.
Together, these parties formed the coalition agreement.
The coalition agreement provides direction for the policies to be developed and implemented during the 2022–2026 council term.
