Designate a monument

What is it?

A municipal landmark is usually a distinctive building, but it can also be a distinctive bridge or park. A home or building can also be designated a landmark. You can ask the municipality to designate your building as a municipal landmark.

How does it work?

  • Whether your building can be designated a municipal landmark depends on factors such as its architectural style and whether any notable figures have lived there.
  • A municipal monument is different from a national monument. National monuments are Rijksoverheid by the Rijksoverheid .

What should I do?

You are requesting that the municipality designate your property as a historic landmark. Please provide the following information:

  • the architect
  • the architectural style
  • the year of manufacture
  • notable former residents
  • archaeological finds made in or around your property
  • significant historical events that took place in or around your building

Additional information

If you do not want your home to be designated as a municipal historic landmark, you must file an objection with the municipality. For example, if you live in the same building as the person who submitted the application to the municipality. You must file your objection within 6 weeks of the designation being announced.
