Grid operator Liander and the municipality of West Maas en Waal are working together to prepare the electricity grid in the municipality for the future. Through the neighborhood approach, Liander is providing more capacity on the electricity grid. They are doing this by installing additional electricity substations and laying new cables. This expansion is necessary to better connect the electricity grid to the growing demand for electricity. To formalize the agreements made, Liander and the municipality signed the cooperation agreement for the neighborhood approach on October 22.

The expansion of the power grid is most visible in the additional electrical substations being installed. The electrical substation, also known as a transformer substation, is a key component of the energy network. Additional substations and cables are needed to strengthen the power grid, thereby increasing its capacity. By working on a village-by-village or neighborhood-by-neighborhood basis, we minimize disruption and work efficiently to reduce and prevent outages and problems on the power grid.

A neighborhood-based approach for efficient implementation

With the signing of the cooperation agreement for the neighborhood approach, the green light has been given to further elaborate on the agreements made between Liander and the municipality of West Maas en Waal.

“I am pleased that Liander will improve the electricity grid in West Maas en Waal. This way, our residents can continue to do laundry, make coffee, and turn on the lights without worries in the future,” says Alderman Evert Jan Slootweg. “With more and more heat pumps and electric cars, the electricity grid will soon be ready for that too. That makes life easier and more sustainable. This way, we can live gas-free by 2050.”

Martijn Schwering, Public Sector Relationship Manager at Liander, says: “A future-proof electricity grid is essential to provide residents of West Maas en Waal with sufficient power now and in the future. By implementing a neighborhood approach in cooperation with the municipality, we can expand and adapt the network in a timely manner to meet the growing demand. This prevents unnecessary inconvenience and ensures that we collectively build a reliable energy supply.”
