Individual Income Supplement

What is it?

The Individual Income Supplement is available to people who have relied on a low income for at least 36 months out of a 48-month period. You are eligible for this benefit if there is no prospect of your income improving. The individual income supplement is not solely based on your family or household situation. The amount is also a percentage of the social assistance standard, which means it can change every year.

How does it work?

You are eligible for the individual income supplement if you meet the following Requirements:

  • You are between the ages of 21 and retirement age
  • You have had a low income for a long time
  • Your assets do not exceed the applicable asset exemption under the Participation Act
  • You have no prospect of a pay raise
  • You have not received an individual income supplement in the past 12 months

The amount of the individual income supplement depends on your circumstances. The supplement is paid out once a year. You are free to spend the supplement as you wish.

Have you received an individual income supplement before?

  • Has it been 12 months since you applied for the individual income supplement, and has your situation remained the same? If so, you can submit a new application.
  • Haven't 12 months passed yet? If not, wait to apply until those 12 months have passed. You can receive the individual income supplement once every 12 months.

Regulation on Individual Income Support

The individual income supplement does not depend solely on family or household circumstances. The amount is also a percentage of the social assistance standard, which means it may change each year. Below is the text as it appears in the Individual Income Supplement Regulation:

Section 4. Amount of the Individual Income Supplement

  1. The annual individual income supplement amounts to:
    1. for a single person, 40% of the social assistance standard referred to in Article 21(a) of the Participation Act, effective as of January 1;
    2. for a single parent, 40% of the social assistance standard referred to in Article 21(b) of the Participation Act, effective as of January 1;
    3. for married couples, 40% of the social assistance standard referred to in Article 21(b) of the Participation Act, effective as of January 1;
  2. If one of the spouses is excluded from the right to an individual income supplement pursuant to Article 11 or Article 13(1) of the Participation Act, the eligible spouse is entitled to an individual income supplement at the rate that would apply to him or her as a single person or a single parent.
  3. For the purposes of the first and second paragraphs, the situation as of the reference date shall be decisive.
  4. The amounts are rounded up to the nearest euro.
