Relocation from abroad

What is it?

If you live abroad and want to move back to the Netherlands, you must register with a municipality. It is important that you have lived in the Netherlands before and that you emigrated abroad after October 1994.

Did you move abroad before October 1994? If so, this is considered a "first registration." Please see the section titled "Moving to the Netherlands."

How does it work?

If you are moving to the Netherlands with your entire family, your partner and children must also register in person.

What should I do?

You must bring:

  • a valid form of identification, such as a passport or other document proving your nationality
  • For people from Aruba, Curaçao, St. Maarten, Bonaire, St. Eustatius, and Saba: a change-of-address notice
  • documents proving that, for example, you got married, divorced, or had children while living abroad (if applicable)
  • proof of lawful residence in the Netherlands

Do you have proof of deregistration from your previous country? If so, please bring that with you as well.

Term

You must register with the municipality within 5 business days of your arrival in the Netherlands. If you do not meet the registration deadline, the municipality may impose a fine on you.
