Resettlement from abroad

What is it?

If you live abroad and want to move back to the Netherlands, you must register with a municipality. It is important that you have lived in the Netherlands before and that you emigrated abroad after October 1994.

Did you move abroad before October 1994? Then you are considered to be a 'first-time registrant'. For more information, see'Moving to the Netherlands'.

How does it work?

If you are moving to the Netherlands with your entire family, your partner and children must also register in person.

What should I do?

You must bring:

  • a valid form of identification, such as a passport or other document proving your nationality
  • For people coming from Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, and Saba: a change of address notification
  • documents proving that, during your stay abroad, you got married, divorced, or had children (if applicable)
  • proof of legal residence in the Netherlands

Do you have proof of deregistration from your previous country? If so, please bring it with you.

Term

You must report to the municipality within 5 working days of your arrival in the Netherlands. If you do not comply with the reporting deadline, the municipality may impose a fine.
