The entire month of September will be dedicated to reading and writing

This is an old post.

During the Week of Reading and Writing, from September 8 to 15, attention is drawn to people who have difficulty with reading and writing. The Digi-Taalhuis West Maas en Waal organizes activities throughout the entire month!

The Digi-Taalhuis West Maas en Waal is once again participating in the Week of Reading and Writing this year. This week begins on Monday, September 8th. Throughout the Netherlands, attention will be drawn to people who struggle with reading and writing until September 15th. This is organized by Stichting Lezen en Schrijven, with the help of many organizations. Just like in previous years, the Digi-Taalhuis West Maas en Waal will organize activities throughout the entire month of September!

Raising Awareness of Low Literacy Through Activities

In West Maas en Waal, Bibliotheek Rivierenland, ROC Rivor, Sociom, and the municipality are committed to drawing extra attention to low literacy. They do this by organizing various activities.

This is the 7th year in a row that we've been reading aloud

The Digi-Taalhuis West Maas en Waal organizes reading sessions at primary schools and playgroups. The mayor, an Alderman or a council member, and reading coach Jovanka read to children of all ages. Parents are also welcome to attend the playgroup sessions.

The Mobile Digi-Taalhuis visits schools and various preschools to raise awareness of the Digi-Taalhuis (
). After all, the more people know about the Digi-Taalhuis’s capabilities, the better.

Contest: A Crossword Puzzle

In September, a page about low literacy will be featured in the local newspaper, including photos and quotes from participants. This newspaper also contains a competition/crossword puzzle. All residents of the municipality of West Maas en Waal can participate. The crossword puzzle is also available at the libraries in Beneden-Leeuwen and Dreumel and at the town hall. A winner will be drawn from all correct entries, and this winner will receive a nice prize.

Grocery Bingo

On Wednesday, September 17, there will be a grocery bingo event for the participants and language volunteers of the Digi-Taalhuis.

2.5 million adults have difficulty reading and writing

In the Netherlands, 2.5 million adults struggle with reading, writing, and/or math. They often also have difficulty using devices such as computers or cell phones. Struggling with these basic skills has significant consequences. It makes people vulnerable: less self-reliant, less socially active, and less healthy than people who do master these basic skills.

You can go to the Digi-Taalhuis for help.

Call for new language volunteers

Many participants also work with a language volunteer. The Digi-Taalhuis could use even more language volunteers!
