Focus on reading and writing throughout September

This is an old message.

During Reading and Writing Week, from September 8 to 15, attention is drawn to people who have difficulty reading and writing. The Digi-Taalhuis West Maas en Waal is organizing activities throughout the month!

The Digi-Taalhuis West Maas en Waal is participating in Reading and Writing Week again this year. This week starts on Monday, September 8. Throughout the Netherlands, attention will be focused on people who have difficulty reading and writing until September 15. This is organized by the Reading and Writing Foundation, with the help of many organizations. As in previous years, the Digi-Taalhuis West Maas en Waal is organizing activities throughout the month of September!

Focus on low literacy through activities

In West Maas en Waal, Rivierenland Library, ROC Rivor, Sociom, and the municipality are working to raise awareness of low literacy. They are doing this by organizing various activities.

For the seventh year running, there will be readings

The Digi-Taalhuis West Maas en Waal organizes reading aloud sessions at primary schools and preschools. The mayor, a councilor, or a council member and reading coach Jovanka read aloud to children of all ages. Parents are also welcome to attend the sessions at preschools.

The Mobile Digi-Taalhuis visits schools and various preschools to promote the
Digi-Taalhuis. Because the more people know about the possibilities of the Digi-Taalhuis, the better.

Contest: a crossword puzzle

In September, there will be a page about low literacy in the local newspaper. It will include photos and quotes from participants. There will also be a competition/crossword puzzle in this newspaper. All residents of the municipality of West Maas en Waal can participate. The crossword puzzle is also available at the libraries in Beneden-Leeuwen and Dreumel and at the town hall. A winner will be drawn from all correct entries. This winner will receive a nice prize.

Grocery Bingo

On Wednesday, September 17, there will be a grocery bingo for participants and language volunteers of the Digi-Taalhuis.

2.5 million adults have difficulty reading and writing

In the Netherlands, 2.5 million adults have difficulty reading, writing, and/or doing arithmetic. They often also have difficulty using a computer or mobile phone, for example. Difficulty with these basic skills has major consequences. It makes people vulnerable: less self-reliant, less socially active, and less healthy than people who do have these basic skills.

You can go to the Digi-Taalhuis for help.

Call for new language volunteers

Many participants also work with a language volunteer. The Digi-Taalhuis could use more language volunteers!
