Groene Dorpsstraat in Wamel for the Future
The redevelopment of Dorpsstraat in Wamel completed. The street has been given a new look that emphasizes greenery, climate adaptation, and biodiversity.
More space for green areas
Whereas Dorpsstraat used to consist mainly of stone and pavement, plenty of space has now been set aside for greenery. A wide variety of plants and trees have been selected for the planting beds. These species attract insects and bees and bring flowers and color to the street throughout the different seasons.
The design also takes the changing climate into account. The additional greenery helps to better absorb rainwater and provides more cooling on hot days.
History on Display in the Streetscape
A special feature of the project is the section of Dorpsstraat between the two churches. The same linden trees have been planted throughout this area, which further emphasizes the historic character of this part of the village. In contrast, the section between Hollenhof and Waalbandijk features a greater variety of trees and plants.
Sustainable benches encourage people to meet
In addition, new benches made from recycled materials have been installed along Dorpsstraat. In this way, the municipality is also contributing to a more sustainable public space. The benches offer residents and visitors a place to rest for a moment, meet up, or enjoy the revitalized streetscape.
Alderman van den Boom emphasizes the importance of the new benches: “With this redesign, we’re not only making Dorpsstraat greener, but we’re also taking a step toward a more sustainable public space. The benches made from recycled materials demonstrate how we’re putting reuse into practice. It’s wonderful that residents and visitors can sit here, meet one another, and at the same time see sustainability taking shape in their own living environment. I’m proud of that.”
