Placing a gravestone or memorial

What is it?

If you wish to place a gravestone or memorial plaque on a grave, you will need a permit from the municipality. Your gravestone specialist can arrange this for you.

If you want to place a memorial in a public place, you need permission from the road authority. This is often the municipality, but it can also be Rijkswaterstaat, the province, or the water board. It is important that the memorial does not compromise traffic safety. For example, you can place a memorial in a public place for a traffic victim or victim of senseless violence.

What should I do?

Usually, the gravestone specialist will apply for the permit on your behalf. The funeral director can also do this for you. You may also apply for the permit yourself. Please provide the following information with your application:

  • the dimensions of the gravestone or memorial plaque
  • the type of material
  • the text
  • on which grave you would like to place the gravestone or memorial plaque

Memorial in a public place

  • Ask the municipality who is responsible for maintaining the road where you want to place the memorial.
