Erecting a headstone or memorial
What is it?
If you wish to place a headstone or memorial plaque on a grave, you will need a permit from the municipality. Your headstone specialist can arrange this for you.
If you wish to place a memorial in a public space, you need permission from the road authority. This is often the municipality, but it can also be the Department of Public Works, the province, or the water board. It is important that the memorial does not compromise traffic safety. For example, you can place a memorial in a public space for a victim of a traffic accident or a victim of senseless violence.
What should I do?
In most cases, the headstone specialist will apply for the permit on your behalf. The funeral director can also do this for you. You may also apply for the permit yourself. When applying, please provide the following information:
- the dimensions of the headstone or memorial plaque
- the type of material
- the text
- on which grave you would like to place the headstone or memorial plaque
Memorial in a public space
