Successful tile campaign results in 560 m² of green space

This is an old post.

During the tile exchange campaign by the municipality of West Maas en Waal, no fewer than 143 households exchanged 560 m² of garden tiles for plants and shrubs. The most popular plant among participants was the licorice plant, followed by the butterfly bush.

The tile exchange campaign by the municipality of West Maas en Waal on Saturday, April 12, was a great success. No fewer than 143 households handed in 560 m² of garden tiles on this sunny day. In return, they received plants that promote biodiversity. To ensure everything ran smoothly, 13 enthusiastic volunteers assisted.

Favorites: licorice plant and butterfly bush

Residents were able to indicate their plant preferences in advance. The most popular plant among participants was the licorice plant, followed by the butterfly bush. Both plants are loved by bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects and help create a vibrant, green garden.

A step in the right direction

Alderman Jan Slootweg also pitched in on the day of the event and looks back on it with satisfaction:

"What a fantastic day! It’s wonderful to see how committed our residents are. Removing 560 square meters of concrete is truly a step in the right direction. Together, we’re making our community greener, healthier, and more future-proof.”

With this tile-exchange program, the municipality is taking a concrete step toward a climate-friendly living environment. After all, greenery in the garden not only helps prevent flooding, but also cools the area and promotes biodiversity. In short: a win-win for everyone.
