The municipality of West Maas en Waal is going to start working on sustainable procurement
On May 22, 2025, the municipality of West Maas en Waal proudly signed the Socially Responsible Procurement and Purchasing (MVOI) manifesto. This is an agreement to be more conscious about the products that are purchased.

Sustainable alternatives where possible
By signing the manifesto, the municipality joins other governments and organizations that consider a fair, green, and future-proof economy to be important. In collaboration with suppliers and partners in the region, the municipality will seek innovative and sustainable alternatives at an acceptable price. We pay attention to the purchase price, but also take the total lifespan into account. For example, an LED bulb is more expensive than an incandescent bulb, but lasts much longer and uses less power. This means that the investment is slightly higher now, but it is cheaper in the long term.
Conscious purchasing for a better environment
Alderman Marieke van den Boom is pleased with this step: "What we buy affects our living environment. We want to be conscious about this. This means that we want to purchase more sustainable products and services. We are starting immediately by replacing the disposable cups at the municipal depot. Our field service colleagues will all receive a personal reusable cup, made from recycled disposable paper cups. This is a good start, but we are going to apply it more broadly. For example, we are investigating the possibility of reusing traffic signs. This is another step in the right direction. Onward to a municipality that is ready for the future!"
