The Municipality of West Maas en Waal is embarking on sustainable procurement.

This is an old post.

On May 22, 2025, the Municipality of West Maas en Waal proudly signed the Manifest for Socially Responsible Commissioning and Procurement (MVOI). This agreement commits to a more conscious approach to purchasing products.

Sustainable alternatives whenever possible

By signing the manifesto, the municipality joins other governments and organizations that prioritize a fair, green, and future-proof economy. In collaboration with suppliers and partners in the region, the municipality will seek out innovative and sustainable alternatives at an affordable price. We consider the purchase price, but also take the total lifespan into account. For example, an LED bulb is more expensive than an incandescent bulb, but lasts much longer and uses less electricity. As a result, the initial investment is slightly higher, but it is cheaper in the long run.

Conscious purchasing for a better environment

Alderman van den Boom is pleased with this step: “What we buy has an impact on our environment. We want to be mindful of this. This means we want to purchase more sustainable products and services. We’re starting right away by replacing the disposable cups at the municipal yard. Our field staff will all receive a personal reusable cup made from recycled paper disposable cups. This is a great start, but we plan to expand this initiative. For example, we’re exploring the possibility of reusing traffic signs. This is another step in the right direction. Onward to a municipality that’s ready for the future!”
