Municipality of West Maas en Waal brightens up with waste container gardens
The municipality of West Maas en Waal is committed to a clean and green living environment, partly through the waste container gardens. There are now already 21 gardens in the municipality, which provide a cheerful appearance around the underground waste containers.

The municipality of West Maas en Waal is committed to a clean and green living environment. A great example of this are the container gardens. These gardens provide a cheerful appearance around the underground Waste containers. There are now 21 container gardens, spread across 6 villages.
The small gardens are intended to reduce the amount of litter left next to the trash containers. And it’s working. In areas where a small garden has been set up, less litter is being left behind. The small gardens have been placed in areas where litter was frequently left. Residents were also allowed to choose locations themselves. The first container garden was established in October 2021 in Dreumel, at the initiative of concerned residents.
Thanks to the residents who got involved
To see how the container gardens are doing, Alderman Jan Slootweg stopped by Cor van Summeren’s home in Maasbommel: “What makes these gardens special is the dedication of the residents involved. A number of residents have adopted a garden and maintain it with care. Thanks to people like Cor van Summeren, the street looks greener and the trash around the containers is regularly cleaned up.”
There are also volunteers who don’t maintain a container garden but do help clean up litter around the containers. For example, in Boven-Leeuwen. Together, they help create a cleaner, more pleasant living environment for everyone.
