Municipality continues discussions about JOPs

This is an old message.

In June, the municipal executive of West Maas en Waal decided to designate two pilot locations for the installation of youth meeting places (JOPs).

Municipality in talks with local residents

Following this decision, residents living near both locations expressed various concerns about potential nuisance and safety issues. The municipality takes these concerns seriously and has paused the process during the summer period in order to hold follow-up discussions with local residents and other stakeholders. The concerns are not only about the expected impact of the JOPs; residents also have concerns about young people in general.

Young people are part of society

The JOPs are part of the 'Ruimte voor de Jeugd' (Space for Youth) project. The aim of this project is to create a healthy, promising, and safe environment for young people. Alderman Rob Reuvers emphasizes the importance of the JOPs: "There are problems among young people that need attention. Creating youth meeting places can help to tackle these problems. This starts with understanding each other and giving young people space. By placing youth meeting places in neighborhoods, we create connections between young people and the neighborhood. In this way, young people become a real part of society. Together with residents and professionals, we can ensure a safe and healthy environment in which our youth can grow up."

Next steps

The municipality is continuing discussions with local residents in order to develop a pilot project that enjoys broad support. The input of local residents is very important in this regard. Together with professionals, young people, and local residents, the municipality wants to take further steps in this project.
