City continues discussions on JOPs

The Board of Mayor and Alderman of the municipality of West Maas en Waal decided in June to designate two pilot locations for placing youth meeting places (JOPs).
The municipality is in talks with local residents
Following this decision, residents living near both locations have raised various concerns about potential disturbances and safety. The municipality takes these concerns seriously and has put the process on hold for the summer in order to hold follow-up discussions with residents and other stakeholders. The concerns are not limited to the expected impact of the JOPs; residents also have concerns about youth in general.
Young people are part of society
The JOPs are part of the “Space for Youth” project. The goal of this project is to create a healthy, opportunity-rich, and safe environment for young people. Alderman Reuvers emphasizes the importance of the JOPs: “There are issues among young people that require attention. Creating youth meeting places can help address these issues. This starts with mutual understanding and giving young people space. By placing these youth meeting places in neighborhoods, we create a connection between young people and the community. This way, young people truly become part of society. Together with residents and professionals, we can ensure a safe and healthy environment in which our youth can grow up.”
Next steps
The municipality remains in dialogue with local residents to develop a pilot project with broad support. The input of local residents is of great importance in this regard. Together with professionals, young people, and local residents, the municipality intends to take further steps in this project.
