Confidential personal data
What is it?
The municipality maintains your personal data in the Basic Register of Persons (BRP). Various organizations may BRP your personal data from the BRP . Which organizations these are depends in part on your personal situation. For example, whether you have children or a driver’s license. See which organizations can receive your personal data on the Rijksoverheid.
If you do not want certain organizations to receive your personal data, you can ask the municipality to keep it confidential. You can also request this on behalf of your children under the age of 16.
How does it work?
If you would prefer that your personal data not be shared with others, you can ask the municipality to keep your information confidential. You always have the right to request this confidentiality and do not need to provide a reason for doing so. Your personal data will then not be shared with:
- non-profit organizations, such as sports and music clubs or charities;
- organizations that provide healthcare to patients in a facility;
- (after weighing the interests) organizations that perform judicial functions;
- the Interdenominational Membership Registry Foundation (SILA), which maintains membership records for religious denominations. Your information may still appear in SILA’s own records. If you would like this information to be deleted, please contact SILA at or your religious denomination.
Under confidentiality provisions, the municipality will only disclose your information to mandatory authorities, such as the police, the judicial system, and the Internal Revenue Service.
The municipality will never disclose your personal data to:
- individuals
- commercial institutions
What should I do?
- Request that the municipality keep your personal data confidential. Include a copy of your valid ID.
- You can revoke the confidentiality of your personal data at any time.
Moving to another municipality
If you have requested confidentiality and subsequently move to another municipality, you do not need to request confidentiality again.
