Change the surname used

What is it?

If you are married, have entered into a registered partnership, are a widow or widower, or are divorced, you can have the municipality change the use of your last name. You can then choose between:

  • only your last name
  • only your partner's last name
  • your partner's last name followed by your own last name
  • your own last name followed by your partner's last name

Please note! This is not the same as changing your own last name because you want to take another parent’s last name or because your last name has a strange meaning.

DigiDChange the surname used

How does it work?

  • The last name you choose will be recorded in the Personal Records Database (BRP). This ensures that other government agencies are also informed and can use the last name you have chosen. You are responsible for notifying other institutions and companies yourself.
  • Your passport, ID card, or driver’s license will always bear your own name, even if you are married or in a registered partnership. However, you can have your partner’s name added to these documents.

What should I do?

You are requesting that the municipality change the use of your last name. You can do this online or in person at the counter.

What do I need?

  • If you submit the application online, you will need your DigiD.
  • If you submit your application at the counter, you will need to present a valid form of identification.

How long does it take?

  • If you submit an online request, the municipality will change your last name within 10 business days.
  • If you visit in person, the city will change your last name immediately.
